# FAQ

> Answers about Koppar's AI PCB design: 4-layer boards, real KiCad files, invented parts, live BOM prices, your own board, privacy, pricing and fabs.

## Is it real KiCad?

Yes. The schematic is a `.kicad_sch`, the board is a `.kicad_pcb`, and both use symbols and footprints from the KiCad libraries. The project file carries the net classes and design rules. Open it in KiCad 10 and change anything. Gerbers are produced by `kicad-cli` from the same board you download.

## Can it do four layers? One layer?

Yes. The plan sets 2 or 4 copper layers, and a 2-layer board that cannot close is retried on 4. State a layer count and it is built as stated: 1 (single-sided), 2, 4, 6 or 8.

A single-sided board is routed on one copper face with no vias: the solder side when the board has through-hole parts, the component side when it is all SMD. Say the board is made by hand (etched at home or in a hackerspace) and the tracks and gaps widen to what hand etching holds, and a 1:1 artwork PDF of the copper face comes with the Gerbers.

## Does it invent parts?

No. Parts are looked up in the KiCad symbol and footprint libraries and in a component database with verified pinouts. A part the researcher cannot find is reported as unresolved, with candidates, and the design does not proceed on a guess. A custom part needs a real footprint before it reaches the netlist, and its pinout comes from the component database, never from a pin number the model made up.

Where do BOM prices come from?

From the distributors: Mouser and JLCPCB's parts catalogue (LCSC). Each line is priced at your quantity, using the price break that covers it, rounded up to the seller's minimum order, and shows the stock behind it. Parts you can buy rank first. When only out-of-stock listings exist, the line is kept and flagged rather than dropped, with up to three labelled alternates (cheaper, more stock, JLCPCB basic library, second source), and you can pin any of them. A design's prices are saved with it and refreshed when you ask. See [Manufacturing](/manufacturing).

## Can I bring my own board?

Yes, through your own agent. `import_kicad_project` over [MCP](/agents/mcp#your-own-board), or `koppar import <project-folder>` on the [CLI](/agents/cli#your-own-kicad-project), takes a zipped KiCad project and opens it as a board workspace. From there the board tools work on your copper directly: inspect every part, place by hand or with the learned placer, set the outline, rules, keepouts and pours, route all or selected nets while keeping what is already connected, rip up, repair, run DRC, render, score and export STEP. Every operation is a revision you can restore. The web studio starts from a description and does not take an upload yet. Without an account, the free [auto-router](/tools) routes the open nets of a placed board.

## What happens when the board does not close?

You get the board, the DRC report and the list of open nets, and the chat agent can diagnose it, re-plan it, add a layer or grow the outline, and run again. What you do not get is Gerbers. See [Verification](/engine/verification).

## How long does a board take?

The schematic takes a few minutes. Placement and routing take minutes on a small board and longer on a dense one. You can close the page; a finish email arrives when the board is done.

## Does it work from my own agent?

Yes. Claude Code, any MCP client, the CLI or REST. Your agent's model does the design work and Koppar runs the checks, place and route, DRC and fab export. It costs no Koppar generations. See [Your own agent](/agents/overview).

## What does it cost?

Early access is free. Designing, previewing and the 3D view do not cost anything. Pricing will be announced before it applies; there is no public price today.

## Which fabs can I use?

Any fab that takes Gerbers, which is all of them. From the studio, once the board is clean: AISLER takes the board in one click, PCBWay gives a live quote and takes the files, and JLCPCB gets an order package with LCSC part numbers ready for its assembly service. MacroFab gets the same package. See [Manufacturing](/manufacturing).

## Who can see my designs?

Each account sees only its own designs and runs. Analytics on the website run only after you allow them.

## Which fab rules does it check against?

KiCad's DRC with the project's rules, plus a fab preset. The JLCPCB preset applies that fab's published minimums, including the per-feature limits KiCad's standard DRC does not cover. The copper-to-edge clearance floor is 0.3 mm, and the routers aim for 0.5 mm. See [Design rules](/engine/design-rules).
